" Yi er san si wu liu qi, wo de peng you zai na li” ( one, two, three, four, five… seven, where are my friends….). The kids in MCS (Monterrico Christians School) love this Chinese song a lot… They keep on singing and singing it even after class.

Ai Lay and I started to teach Chinese in MCS since August, every Tuesday and Thursday, as part of their extra-curriculum program in MCS. Currently we have 15 kids, from 7 to 10 years old. They are a bunch of energetic and lovable children. When they see us every time at school, they will automatically greet us "Ni hao, Ni hao" (How are you?). It is such a joy to see them practise what they have learned from every lesson. These kids are a great motivation to us and we want to teach them well because we believe Chinese is the language of future and it can be a very useful language skill to expand their future social network.

We teach them "Hanyu Pinyin" based on a syllabus from Singapore. Chinese pronunciation is not easy and it can be quite a challenge for them as they usually end up tongue-tied. However, with loads of practice, most of them would get it right. We also employ different methodologies and resources to help them master this first step learning the Chinese language. Oftentimes, both Ai Lay and I are brought back to the times of our childhood where we were also learning Chinese in school!

Besides introducing Chinese as a language, we also hope to introduce Chinese culture to the children, to expand their horizons and to enrich their experiences. We hope that in the end, this stint of learning in the lives of the children will be remembered as one of great fun and great learning.
