Andrew Teoh y Ruth Chong son una encantadora pareja de esposos profesionales que vienen desde Singapur para para dar mayor soporte y multiplicar los frutos de nuestros programas de niños y jóvenes en Gen ACTS club. Ambos son ingenieros graduados con honores en la Nanyang Technological University of Singapore y además Ruth cuenta con un diploma en la enseñanza profesional del idioma Chino. Andrew es el nuevo Gerente Nacional de Gen ACTS – Perú y Ruth es la nueva Gerente de Proyectos en “KIDS ALIVE!”. A la pregunta: ¿Qué importantes cosas esperan despertar en nuestros niños y jóvenes peruanos ?, ellos respondieron:

Ruth: Yo espero usar mi capacidad y mis habilidades para ayudar a los niños a crecer en su potencial instruccional e interpersonal. Haciendo eso, ellos se convertirán en sabedores de conocimiento y de valores que los hagan capaces de relacionarse y trabajar efectivamente con diferentes tipos de personas en diferentes lugares.

Andrew: Los niños y los jóvenes son el futuro. Tu puedes encontrar en ellos el potencial para crear y cambiar la fábrica de la sociedad del mañana. Si ellos se desarrollan bien el impacto puede ser tremendo. Asi que estamos muy entusiasmados en ayudarlos a maximizar su potencial en 3 áreas: Internacional, Instruccional e Interpersonal. Aquí, necesitamos que los niños valoren la oportunidad que se les ha dado, con activa participación, aprendizaje y práctica que no solamente se sientan beneficiarios sino también contribuyentes agradecidos de construir un mejor futuro.

Backgrounds & Responsibilies...

Andrew: I am a graduate from Nanyang Technological University of Singapore with a Honours Degree in Civil and Structural Engineering. I had worked several years for Civil Engineering Consulting Firm and Builders before joining a leading oil rig building company in 2006. I have joined Generation Acts Club International as a professional volunteer since 2002.

As a Country Manager (Peru), my major role is in leading and managing the club in Lima-Peru, which includes planning & strategising all youth and kids projects (e.g., Youth ALIVE!, Kids ALIVE!) with my team of project managers, and creating & managing strategic partnerships with various organizations. My chief aim is to steer the club to fulfil its missions to the maximum in the local context.

Ruth: I was a process engineer in semiconductor company in Singapore. Besides graduating with an Engineering Honours degree, I completed also a diploma in Professional Chinese Teaching this year. My new role in Gen-Acts (Peru) is Kids ALIVE! Project Manager, overseeing all kids-related projects. I hope to see the kids to be developed more fully in their instructional and interpersonal potential.

Youth and Kids...

Andrew: Kids and Youths are our future. You can find in them the potential to create and change the fabric of society of tomorrow. If they are deveped well, the implication and impact are tremendous. So we are excited to help them maximize their potential in 3 areas: International, Instructional and Interpersonal. Here, we need the kids & youth to value this opportunity given, to actively participate, learn and practise such that they not only grow up a good beneficiary of this opportunity but a grateful contributor in future as well!

Ruth: I hope to use my abilities and skills to help the kids grow in their instructional and interpersonal potential. By doing so, they can become potentially knowledgeable grown-ups with sound mind and values, and are able to effectively relate and work with different kinds of people in various settings.

About Peru...

Andrew: Peru is definitely different from the culture where we are from. Here, it is just warmer (people) and richer (culture)...I like this place very much. After a month, now I feel it's a great choice on my part to come here..:)

Ruth: Peru is a very beautiful and culturally-rich country. The food are very delicious and unique. The people are very warm and friendly, so it's not difficuilt to make new friends here. The economy is growing in Peru, however, the literacy is not growing as much. Kids and youths are the precious asset for the future, so I hope through what we are doing, we are able to equip them for a better future.

How effective is Singapore Math in Peru?

Joan Yeo, one of our education specialist, who spent one year in the Peruvian education system as a teacher, would tell you that it is a wonderful addition to what is taught in classes here in Peru. At the same time, it adds value to how Peruvian children learn and grasp Mathematical concepts.

Joan Yeo, una de nuestras especialistas en educación, comparte su experiencia después de haber enseñado por 1 año en el sistema educativo peruano: “Sería un maravilloso agregado a lo que ya se enseña aquí en el Perú. Al mismo tiempo que agrega valores en el modo de como aprenden y logra mantener constantes a los niños peruanos en los conceptos de Matemática.”

Joan teaches remedial classes in an American school here in Lima-Peru that has decided to adopt the Singapore Math curriculum in their school syllabus. For 3 times a week, she helps weaker students from all Primary levels progress in their Mathematical academic performance. Math is not simply about doing additions and subtractions, it is also about application in real life situations. Through these remedial classes, it is Joan's objective to build them up to such a level where application of Mathematical concepts becomes easy and a joy.

Joan enseña clases de reforzamiento en una escuela Americana, aquí en Lima – Perú, que ha decidido adoptar el currículo de Matemática de Singapur en su sílabo escolar. Por 3 veces a la semana, ella ayuda a los estudiantes con más dificultades de todos los niveles en Primaria para que puedan mejorar su rendimiento académico en Matemática. “Matemática no sólo es algo simple sobre sumas y restas sino también es importante por su aplicación en situaciones de la vida real”. A través de estas clases de reforzamiento, el objetivo de Joan es construir en sus estudiantes un nivel donde la aplicación de los conceptos matemáticos lleguen a ser fáciles y divertidos.

In Peru, Math is seldom a subject enjoyed by kids. Most would prefer Science with all its wonderful and curious experiments. We hope that through the Singapore Math method, Math would become a subject to be enjoyed as well.

En Perú, Matemática es un curso raramente disfrutado por los niños. La mayoría de ellos prefiere Ciencias con todos sus maravillosos y curiosos experimentos. Nosotros esperamos que a través de la Metodología de Singapur la Matemática se convierta también en un curso divertido para ellos.

Singapore family in Lima, Peru

"It has been a wonderful 1 month stay in Peru. We have learnt so much about the culture and it has been a great exposure for the kids." commented the family of four from Singapore.

Dr Joshua Kok and Dr Audrey Lee, both medical doctors, came to Peru for their June vacation with their kids, Zachary and Faith, 13 and 12 years old respectively.

1. What do they do usually in Math class in school?
Kids: There would be mental sums almost every week. The teacher would come to class and teach us the concepts. After that, there would be exercises, more exercises and more exercises. And we have homework too! :(

2. What do they do after school?
Kids: Usually we have to stay back in school for remedial classes or extra curricula activities. Sometimes, it is difficult for the teachers to cover everything in class so we have to stay back after school, at least once a week for extra classes.

Zachery and Faith have private tuition classes during some weekdays and the weekends. They literally spend most of their Saturdays studying with their tuition teachers especially during the exam season.

3. What do you think about Spore Math?

Dr Audrey: Things have changed in Singapore Math since I was in Primary school. Today, the Math is very much more difficult than before and students in Singapore are required to work through problems that I had not seen until I was in Secondary school. The model method is very interesting and extremely useful once you know how to use it.

Kids: Math is sometimes really tough and sometimes really easy. Sometime it is really fun but we prefer Disneyland!

It wasn't just pure vacation in Peru. This family contributed their efforts together with us and with some local volunteers in running a Medical Project in Huaycan for 39 kids from 3-5 years old.

Singapore Math Consultancy

It has been enjoyable going to Monterrico Christian School for the 4th time together with Julian Lee, main consultant. The exchanging of ideas and development of the Peruvian students and American teachers on the application of Singapore Math has been enlightening. Their enthusiasm in learning has been encouraging too.

As a Singaporean, I could still imagine that education had been smooth sailing for many in the past. I remember the times that learning wasn't as complicated as it is nowadays. Maybe kids nowadays are the ones that require the education system to be adopted.

My last trip, Jan 2007, back to Singapore has revealed a lot about Singapore education and it's advancement. Lots have changed and improved. Watching my nieces and nephews working hard to complete their homework has revealed how competitive the society has became.

At the same time, I am proud of the development of the education system in Singapore. Singapore Math is a clear example. A good friend of ours, who is a Peruvian math teacher, commented that he is amazed at the depth of foundational build up within the practices in Singapore Math books. In addition, other Peruvians commented that it is genius that kids at a young age are being taught math properly for their future.

Another good friend, consultant to the Ministry of Education here, believe that there is a future for Singapore Math in Peru and he has sent his young son to Monterrico Christian School.

There are still many challenges here- raising awareness and knowledge of Singapore Math. However, it will not undermine our efforts to share and teach Singapore Math to those who want to be champions of Math here.

The Making of Guo Tie in Chinese Class
